This Robert was a Deacon and Col. He was executor of his f ather's estateand inherited his homestead mansion (Hotel) a nd gristmill. He was aprominent man in the affairs of th e Old Church, a sturdy Pilgrim anddeacon some thirty years . He held commissions of Captain and Major inthe thirteent h regiment, General Godfrey's Brigade, and went to RhodeIsl and to protect the people from a surprise by the British, i f theyshould land there in 1776. He was afterward, Colone l of the sme regimentin 1781 and held other responsible pos itions.He closed the hotel for a private mansion, and conducted th e old gristmill until it was closed in 1823. The old mil l was removed in 1823,after running 171 years, 47 years b y Thomas Lincoln and sons John andSamuel and 124 years by R obert Crossmand and descendants. In his will,he gave the o ld mansion to his grandsons, James WIlliams and William War eCrossman. James W. afterwards purchased his brother WIlli ams share andresided there until 1850. The old mansion fin ally passed from theCrossman Family after 150 years occupat ion. It was used many years as atenement house and is no w (1937) used in connection with a fillingstation. It is s ituated on Cohannet St. opposit the YMCA building.The old historic grist mill was removed in 1823 and the flu me conveyingthe water under it(crossing Cohannet St) was fi lled to aid themanufacturing enterprise of Crocker and Rich mond (Taunton Claico Works).The ancient fulling mill, which had run 150 years by Rober t Luscomb andothers, John Sturtevant and deacon Roswell Bal lera, was removed to SpringStreet in 1823-4
